A group of Cumnock volunteers have been shortlisted by a Tesco community grant.

The firm's store in Auchinleck has put forward Police Scotland's youth volunteers for the prize, which is funded by the money raised from 5p carrier bag charges.

During each voting period, three community projects in each local area are voted on by customers who are offered a token at the checkout which they in turn put into the box relating to the group they wish to support.

The Cumnock programme promotes good citizenship and helps youngsters to understand how the police operate in the village.

Constable Chris Bysouth said: " We are very proud of our volunteers who provide help and support to communities throughout Ayrshire at a wide range of initiatives and events.

"Over the past year they have visited sheltered housing complexes, acted as guides at major events such as the Open Golf and Scottish Airshow and have participated in community leaflet drops.

"This funding would make a huge difference and would allow the young people to build on the great work they are doing in the communities in which they serve.

"If you are shopping in Tesco in Auchinleck and are offered a token at the checkout, please consider supporting Cumnock PSYV."
