A 24-year-old thief behind a violent raid at a post office was caught because of his pink trainers.

Jordan Renwick tried to disguise himself with a mask during a raid on the post office on Balmoral Place in Galashiels.

But Renwick was undone by his distinctive footwear.

CCTV footage, viewed later by police, showed Renwick still wearing the trainers as he spent money at another shop on the day of the robbery.

Renwick was armed with a hammer when he robbed Gala Post Office on February 12, repeatedly punching the manager and robbing a man who walked in on the raid.

Sentencing Renwick at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday, judge Lord Burns told him: "You have 31 convictions encompassing some 53 offences. For a young man, that is a formidable record and you are placed at high risk of future offending."

He jailed Renwick for four years and another 220 days, for unexpired jail time from a prior sentence from which he had been freed early.

Defence counsel Victoria Dow said Renwick had "a fairly significant drug" debt at the time of the offence and owed money to a "heavy drug dealer".

She added: "It would seem his offending behaviour occurs when he is under the influence of illicit substances, be it ecstasy, cocaine etcetera"

"Upon his sobriety the next morning when he woke up he fully appreciated what happened."
