A hedgehog, a parrot and a dozen dogs are among the pets that officials are working to temporarily re-house after the evacuation of the Chalcots estate in north London over fire safety concerns.

Thousands of residents were urged to leave their home at short notice after officials at Camden Council ruled that their homes posed a fire risk following urgent inspections in the wake of the Grenfell disaster.

But it is not just humans who were left seeking a roof over their heads - dozens of pets were also caught up in the turmoil.

Many of those told to leave have also been registering their pets as they look for temporary accommodation while corrective work is carried out over the next two to four weeks.

Senior animal welfare officer, Joe Clarke, from Islington Council who are working in partnership with Camden, said animals registered with them so far include 12 dogs, six cats, two budgies, a cockatiel, a parrot, two hamsters, a guinea pig, three tanks of fish, and a hedgehog.

"That's just the residents we have spoken to who have pets, and we are looking at finding out what their arrangements are and finding out how we can help and support them," he said.

"In most cases we anticipate the animals will be staying with owners."

He said if the animal is unable to go with its owners there are a number of options they can consider.

One is council-run kennel facilities, though there have been offers of help and support from the Cats Protection League, the RSPCA and alocal dog group.
