Speed cameras in Scotland raised more than £5m in fines last year, new figures show.

The total is £200,000 higher than the year before and the highest amount since 2014.

Cameras in Tayside, Central and Fife produced the most money at £1.3m, followed by Grampian and the Highlands and Islands, which made £1.2m.

There are more than 200 fixed speed cameras on Scottish roads, earning an average of £14,000 a day.

A total of £5.09m in fines were paid to courts during the 2016/17 financial year.

The figures were revealed in a Freedom of Information request by the Scottish Conservatives.

The party said speed cameras have a role to play in improving road safety but should not be seen as "cash cows".
