Network Rail has confirmed it will begin to repair and strengthen to railway bridges in Mauchline on Monday.

The work on the bridges over Ayr Road is part of a wider programme of work on the firm's structures, which is needed every 25 years.

Starting on Monday, the work will be ongoing until Friday, August 4, and temporary traffic lights will be in place in the meantime.

The road will also need to be closed to traffic overnight from Thursday, July 20, until July 25, and a signposted diversion will be put in place.

Billy McKay, Network Rail programme manager, said: "We appreciate that temporary traffic lights on any road are inconvenient.

"However, this is the most efficient and safest way to undertake the work required on the bridge.

"Delivering this work on both of the two adjacent bridges, in just six weeks is a logistical challenge but we have planned the job carefully with our contractors and will complete it with the minimum possible inconvenience to the local community."
