TV weatherman Fred Talbot has been jailed for four years after being convicted of sexually abusing teenage boys on school trips to Scotland.

The 67-year-old former teacher indecently assaulted several schoolboys in the 1970s and 1980s.

Last month, jurors at Lanark Sheriff Court returned guilty verdicts for seven charges against him. He was cleared of two charges on not proven verdicts.

On one occasion, Talbot plied his young victim with alcohol to render him intoxicated in order to abuse him on a camping trip.

Speaking after the sentencing, procurator fiscal Fraser Gibson, praised the courage of the former presenter's victims.

"Fred Talbot was in a position of trust and abused that to prey on vulnerable boys," he said.

"For over thirty years he may well have thought that he had escaped justice but he was wrong and thanks to the courage of his victims in coming forward to report what happened to them is now paying the consequences for his actions."

Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown, who was taught by Talbot in the 1970s, gave evidence during the trial.

The singer said he had told his story to "hundreds of people" but had not reported Talbot to TV bosses.

Talbot is already serving a five-year sentence imposed in 2015 for indecently assaulting two other schoolboys.

He denied the latest allegations during his nine-day trial at Lanark Sheriff Court last month.

A jury took four hours to convict him of seven of the nine historical abuse charges, however.
