Two pubs in Scotland have been fined £10,000 each after illegally showing Sky Sports programmes.

The broadcaster has successfully taken legal action against the Woodside Bar in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, and the Red Lion Inn in Doune, Stirlingshire.

Both have each been ordered to pay £10,000 in damages after being found to be infringing Sky's copyright.

Undercover investigators for the firm visited the pubs after they were reported.

Head of commercial piracy at Sky, George Lawson, said: "This is why we are committed to protecting Sky customers who are unfairly losing business due to this illegal activity.

"These latest orders demonstrate how seriously the courts take piracy through the large penalty applied but also through the order to fund advertising, which we hope will help to highlight the consequences of televising Sky's content illegally."

It is understood investigators visited the Woodside Bar while a Scottish Cup match between Albion Rovers and Celtic was being shown in January.

The bar said it was sorry for the incident but could not comment further.

Nobody from the Red Lion Inn was available for comment.
