A two-day off-road running event is to be held on the Isle of Arran for the first time.

The event, dubbed the "Ultra Tour of Arran", will see hundreds of athletes descend on the island next April to rack up a distance of 100km in 48 hours.

Organisers Rat Race Adventure Sports, the UK's largest provider of adventure races, have pulled together a timetable of events for the weekend.

Day one will take participants through the villages of Brodick, Lamlash and Whiting Bay, and will feature quiet paths and forest trails.

The second day will see a more difficult route, with the majority of the event taking place off-road, including North Goat Fell and Goat Fell.

Runners can choose from a one or two day option, with each leg covering around 31 miles each day.

A free shuttle bus will take participants from the ferry to the basecamp in Brodick where runners can set up their tents.

Jim Mee, of Rat Race Adventure Sports, said: "The Ultra Tour is a really achievable step up from a marathon distance taking the competitor into ultra-running territory.

"However, they don't call Arran 'Scotland in miniature' for nothing.

"The event will include some serious mountain running, taking in some incredible scenery and dramatic mountains in the north, and dense forest and coastal paths in the south, all designed to push our runners to their limits.

The event will take place on April 14 and 15, 2018 and more information can be found at www.ratrace.com
