A new football field and a running track are to be installed at Kilwinning Academy.

An application for the formation of all-weather synthetic grass sports pitch and athletics track was submitted last month, and approved on Tuesday June 6.

The new sporting additions incorporate drainage, perimeter fencing, floodlighting and access paths.

Nairn McDonald, secretary for Kilwinning Community Council, said it is looking forward to its construction.

He said: "Kilwinning Community Council welcome the investment being given the Kilwinning Academy by the council.

"Kilwinning Academy has long been the only school in North Ayrshire without an all weather pitch facility instead having the old Blaze pitch.

"This investment will mean our young people have a facility fit for the 21st century and one that will stand the wear of use. We look forward to seeing it built and in use later this year."
