Heavy rain, flooding, thunder and lightning will hit Scotland in the wake of the current heatwave.

The country enjoyed its hottest day of the year so far on Friday, after temperatures peaked at 29.4C in Lossiemouth.

But the blue skies will give way to thunder and rain on Saturday afternoon across much of Scotland.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty said: "Temperatures will widely reach the mid-20s today and there is the possibility that the north west Highlands, Inverness and Moray might approach 30C."

The temperature is unlikely to beat the all-time highest temperature in Scotland of 32.9C, however, which was recorded in the Borders during a heatwave in 2003.

Sean said: "Unfortunately as people are planning for the holiday weekend the weather has decided to change, with a thundery plume heading up from the south during Saturday with heavy downpours of rain expected."

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning and predicted up to 30mm of rain could fall in a single hour in parts of Scotland on Saturday.

"A narrow band of thundery rain will affect central Scotland in the morning and reach north of the country by the afternoon," Sean continued.

"There could be some intense rainfall and risk of localised flooding and the remnants will still linger around the north of the country giving quite a damp day."

Runners at the Marathon Festival in Edinburgh can expect a dry, sunny start in on Saturday morning with some thundery rain beginning to fall at lunchtime.

Football fans attending Saturday's Scottish Cup final at Hampden in Glasgow are likely to experience showery weather, Sean added.
