An oil worker has been reported missing from a rig in the North Sea.

Police have launched a search for the 49-year-old man, who had been working on the Noble Lloyd Noble installation.

The alarm was raised around 9.20pm on Tuesday after he could not be located on board the jack-up rig in the Mariner Field, approximately 90 miles east of Shetland.

Emergency services are searching for him, with a rescue helicopter, coastguard and supply vessels for the platform all involved alongside police.

All operations on the rig have been stood down.

Statoil has mobilised emergency response teams in Aberdeen and Stavanger to help support staff.

Inspector Steve McEwan said: "An extensive search of the rig itself and the water surrounding it is ongoing, led by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

"This involves the use of a search and rescue helicopter, two standby vessels and a platform supply vessel.

"We are working closely with the companies involved and next of kin to keep them informed of any developments."

A spokesman for Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "A UK Coastguard helicopter, an offshore support vessel and other vessels in the area searched overnight for a man missing off an offshore mobile drilling rig.

"The search was coordinated by the UK Coastguard."
