Peter Capaldi seemed destined for life in the limelight from an early age growing up in Glasgow.

During his time as a student at the Glasgow School of Art, he formed a punk band with comedian and chat show star Craig Ferguson before turning to acting.

Roles in film, TV and stage followed before his role as spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It catapulted him to stardom.

The role brought critical acclaim as well bigger job offers and in 2013 he was selected to replace Matt Smith as the time lord, Doctor Who.

Earlier this year, the 59-year-old announced he would give up the role in order to pursue other projects.
