An appeal honouring a late Largs lady has been announced as one of the official charities of this year's Scottish Open golf tournamen.

Gillian's Saltire Appeal, which provides respite accommodation for cancer sufferers and their families, was named alongside Maggie's.

The two charities work together to provide support to people with cancer and those who care for them.

Throughout the tournament, both charities will benefit from a wide range of fundraising opportunities.

The Ayrshire-based appeal was named after Gillian Ward, a wife and mother who died of cancer in 2005.

Her husband, Les, founded the campaign in her memory to provide practical and meaningful help for people who suffer from cancer.

Les said: "The Gillian's Saltire Appeal is delighted to be partnering with Maggie's as official charities of this year's Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Dundonald.

"The funds raised during the iconic Scottish event will go a long way to improving and enhancing our properties in Largs and Millport, which we provide free of charge for cancer suffers from Maggie's centres and their families to enjoy some well-deserved holiday respite."
