A group of schoolchildren have been honoured with a medal ceremony at Edinburgh Castle after completing a ten-day expedition to Greenland.

The youngsters from Broughton High School and Fettes College braved temperatures as low as -25C, camped on sea ice and hauled their own 45kg sleds during the 100km Polar Academy trip.

The project aims to teach pupils survival skills to boost self-confidence and esteem.

Arran Goddard, 16, said: "Wow, it's an amazing feeling to receive this medal.

"I'll never forget this for the rest of my life. Being part of the Polar Academy has definitely made me feel more confident and now I want to get out and help inspire others."

A further expedition involving Scottish pupils is planned for March 2018 with the chosen school to be announced later this summer.
