The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is urging the owners of derelict buildings on Tayside to ensure their properties are locked up after a spate of blazes.

Firefighters had to tackle a major blaze in the Hilltown in Dundee after flames burst through the roof of Forebank House earlier this week.

The building, which has been abandoned for 30 years, is on the at-risk register and has been a magnet for youths.

Crews battled the blaze for two hours at the abandoned Victorian house.

Colin Grieve, local senior officer for the region, said: "Structures such as these have the potential to cause great risk to members of the public who are thinking of entering them for any reason.

"For younger people, these structures can appear to be an area for adventurous play, however, the danger of harm is very real.

"Such activity is not only reckless and dangerous but can divert SFRS resources away from genuine emergencies."
