A Cumnock youngster has been named regional and national volunteer of the year at a national police awards ceremony.

Laura Murray has been a member of Cumnock's Police Scotland Youth Volunteers for four years and is the longest serving youth volunteer in Scotland.

PSYV held their first annual awards ceremony in Alloa Town Hall,  recognising outstanding young people volunteering in the community.

Laura, who has completed more than 500 hours of voluntary work, received the top award from assistant chief constable Wayne Mawson.

Group co-ordinater constable Tom Northorpe said: "Laura is someone who displays the highest levels of professionalism at all times, is polite and courteous with both young people and the public, and is a credit to the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers and to Police Scotland.

"She is described by other young people within the group as a great team member, who always encourages the volunteers to take part in whatever activity they are doing and is like a big sister, and an amazing role model.

"We are fortunate to have her as a member of our group."
