New figures show NHS Ayrshire and Arran is failing to hit a target for breast cancer screening.

A report has revealed the authority failed to hit the 80% target in the last three years and there has been a drop in the number of women being checked.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran is achieving the minimum standard, however, despite its performance going down by 0.2% since 2014.

Four areas in Scotland are performing below the minimum standard and only three authorities are meeting the target.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is currently failing to achieve the minimum standard by 2.5%, while Shetland is over target by 4.4%.

In 2015/2016, there were 1392 cases of screen-detected breast cancer diagnosed in women of all ages in Scotland.
