A 25-year-old woman was injured when the stairwell of a city centre building collapsed in Perth.

She was trapped after tumbling into a basement when the floor of the close at a property on Atholl Street caved in on Wednesday morning.

She had to be lifted out by firefighters and was taken to Perth Royal Infirmary for treatment.

The three-storey building where the collapse took place is next to a restaurant called The Mexican.

Police cordoned off the street while firefighters and paramedics dealt with the incident.

Gas engineers were also on site to make sure the building was safe.

A fire service spokesman said: "At 7.36am on Wednesday, March 29, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a person trapped within the basement of a block of flats on Atholl Street in Perth.

"Five appliances were immediately mobilised and crews ensured the area was secured and extricated the individual who was transferred into the care of paramedics.

"Firefighters remain at the scene."

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We dispatched one ambulance, our special operations response team, two managers and a trauma team.

"One female patient was taken to Perth Royal Infirmary."

Police said the woman suffered minor injuries. He added that a structural assessment of the building had been ordered.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney, who represents the Perthshire North constituency, said the incident was "very concerning."

A Perth City Council spokeswoman added: "Officers from the council's Building Standards team attended the site in Atholl Street to inspect the structural integrity of the building.

"Officers from the Councils Housing Service are available for any residents in Atholl Street who require assistance."

MP Pete Wishart said: "I was very concerned to hear about the situation in Atholl Street and I hope that the lady who was injured makes a swift recovery.

"Early reports appear to suggest that part of the flooring gave way and this is very worrying to hear if accurate.

"I understand that the emergency services were very quick to respond and that gas was quickly isolated to ensure the safety of others in the area.

"I would like to pay thanks to those who were involved in the immediate response and those who will be involved in the coming days to ensure the safety of the site.

"I will be receiving an update on the situation as it develops."
