Teenager collapsed and died after amateur boxing match
The 17-year-old from Ripley collapsed in the ring at event in Derbyshire.
Police are investigating the death of a teenager who collapsed and died after taking part in an amateur boxing match on Friday night.
The fighter was named locally as Eddie Bilbey, aged 17.
He is said to have collapsed in the ring after losing to opponent Tyler Rivers in the East Midlands Welterweight Youth contest at Post Mill Centre, South Normanton, Derbsyhire.
Mr Bilbey, of Ripley, near Derby, was treated by professional medical workers at the match and paramedics, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at Kingsmill Hospital.
Mr Rivers' coach Craig Perkins said the boxer had seemed fine and alert moments before he collapsed.
"Eddie came over and shook both coaches' hands, and when the referee went to raise our lad's hand, Eddie just stumbled forward," he said.
He paid tribute to Mr Bilbey as a "talented boxer" who was "fit as a "fiddle".
The 45-year-old said both fighters had undergone a pre-fight medical and had been wearing all the correct safety gear, including head-guards.
He added that the three-round fight had been competitive but said Mr Bilbey "didn't take any big hits".
Police are now investigating the circumstances of the boxer's death and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
A post mortem examination to determine the cause of his death will take place in the next few days.
In a statement Derbyshire Police said: "At this stage, there don't appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding this death" but asked anyone at the tournament who has footage of the bout to let them know.
The Board of England Boxing said they were "extremely saddened" by the death of the Mr Bilbey.
A statement added: "The Board of England Boxing has set up an investigation to establish the facts of what happened and will provide an update when we know more."
