A police sniper "accidentally opened fire" during a speech being given by President Hollande.

Two people were "slightly injured" in the tent , a French official said.

It is believed the sniper, who was standing on a nearby roof, shot through the canvas of a tent where drinks were being made.

The bullet passed through a waiter's thigh and lodged in another person's calf.

Mr Hollande had been inaugurating a new fast trainline in the western town of Villognon.

After the shot rang out, the French president said: "I hope it's nothing serious. I think not."

He asked if anyone had been hurt and then continued with his speech.

One local report said the safety catch of the sniper's weapon was unlocked, allowing the gun to be discharged accidentally when the officer moved.
