A historic jute works in Dundee could be demolished to make way for new homes.

The former Taybank Works on Morgan Street was the last jute mill in operation in the UK when it closed down in 1999.

Caledonia Housing Association has lodged proposals to tear down the structure and erect housing on the site.

The group plans to build ten flats and 18 houses for rent on the site of the former mill, which was built by the Pearce Brothers in 1843.

Caledonia said the plans would "boost local employment" and help to transform the Stobswell area of Dundee.

Andrew Kilpatrick, the association's asset management director, said: "Caledonia's planning application for Morgan Street Dundee is a continuation of Caledonia's goals to provide high quality affordable homes for rent throughout Scotland and part of our ambitious drive to build 1000 new homes across our group partners over the next five years."

The council will decide on the proposed development at a later date.
