Rail bridge work to close main road in Stirling for 12 months
Network Rail is seeking permission to reconstruct an overbridge on the A905 Kerse Road.
One of the main roads through Stirling will be closed for 12 months to allow the reconstruction of a rail bridge.
Network Rail has submitted a planning application for the works to replace the structure on the A905 Kerse Road.
The project is linked to the electrification of the Stirling to Alloa railway line.
Under the proposals, the works would begin in May and last for "approximately 12 months", the rail infrastructure body stated, during which time the road would be "managed through a total closure and diversions."
In the planning application lodged with Stirling Council, Network Rail said the overbridge had to be reconstructed due to safety requirements associated with the new electrified wires.
The public body stated: "Recent changes have been made to the safety requirements for the distance between new electrified wires and the soffit of overbridges.
"There is also a requirement for parapets to be solid and of a height of 1.85m (6ft).
"The bridge is not capable of these modifications. Consideration was given to lowering the track below the bridge or raising the existing deck but both of these options were considered to be technically unfeasible.
"The structure is therefore required to be reconstructed."
It added: "The overbridge is a Stirling Council-owned structure. As such, the permitted development rights normally afforded to Network Rail do not apply on this occasion and a planning application is therefore submitted."
Network Rail said it is in "detailed discussions" with the council on traffic management for the route close to the Craigs Roundabout.
A decision on the planning application will be taken at a later date.
