A man who tied up and robbed a frail pensioner in his own home has been jailed.

Scott MacKenzie robbed Brian Reid after sneaking into the 69-year-old's flat at a sheltered housing complex in Stirling.

The 29-year-old bound the hands of the terrified OAP before fleeing the scene.

MacKenzie was later caught after he was found with cigarettes he had stolen from his victim.

On Wednesday, McKenzie - who has a history of violence - was jailed for ten years after pleading guilty to assault and robbery.

The High Court in Glasgow heard Mr Reid had a severe lung condition and needed regular help from carers.

He was at home last September 9 when he heard the front door open before MacKenzie appeared in his living room.

Prosecutor Allan Nicol said the OAP thought MacKenzie was there by "mistake".

MacKenzie pounced on his victim, tying his hands together with string and ignoring his cries that he was getting the police.

Mr Nicol added: "MacKenzie punched him twice to the face. He then demanded money and 'strong bags to put things in'."

MacKenzie's loot included £20 in cash and ten packets of cigarettes.

The pensioner's sister later arrived to find his home had been ransacked.

Footage from the complex caught MacKenzie, also of Stirling, going into the flat and then leaving.

He was later held but said he knew "nothing" but was found with several packets of the cigarettes he had taken.

Lord Bonomy said the jail term would have been 12 years but for his guilty plea.

He branded the crime "despicable, cowardly but frightening".
