A man who died following a disturbance near an Edinburgh pub has been named online as a former junior footballer.

In a statement on their website, Bonnyrigg Rose FC said 30-year-old Shaun Woodburn had died in "tragic circumstances".

The club added that Mr Woodburn had been with them from February 2012 until July 2015, when he "decided to take a break from football to concentrate on his young family".

Police were called to the incident on Great Junction Street in the Leith area of the city at around 2am on New Year's Day.

Mr Woodburn was found with serious injuries and taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he died in the evening.

Bonnyrigg Rose said he had been a "true gentleman" during his three years with the club, adding: "He didn't have a bad word to say about anyone and nobody had a bad word to say about him, which makes this all the harder to understand.

"Still only 30 he had his whole young life ahead of him to look forward to... like many of our supporters who have heard the news over the past 24 hours and who knew Shaun, we are truly heartbroken."

The club also said tributes to Mr Woodburn can be laid at their entrance gates near the dressing rooms.

Police Scotland say they are treating the incident as murder, adding that boy of 16 and an 18-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the disturbance.

They are expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.

Detective inspector Graham Grant said: "My thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has sadly passed away.

"A murder inquiry is now being carried out and there will continue to be a police presence in Leith as we conduct our investigation and provide support to the local community following these tragic events."
