An elderly man and woman are in hospital with serious injuries after a road crash on the A9.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon between Bannockburn and Plean.

A Kia Picanto and a Ford Mondeo collided, with an 87-year-old man and his 82-year-old female passenger suffering serious injuries.

They remain in Forth Valley Royal Hospital where their condition is described as "serious but stable".

Two female occupants of the other car were also taken to hospital with minor injuries and later released.

The road was closed between Greencornhills Roundabout and at the junction with the B9124 at Plean Farm Cottages for around four hours while the scene was cleared of debris and investigation work began.

Road policing officers have now appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Inspector Roddy MacMillan said: "The road was closed for sometime to allow for investigations at the scene.

"I urge anyone who witnessed this incident or either vehicle prior to the collision to contact police immediately on 101 if not already done so."
