A 13-year-old boy has died after he was buried in a snow mound while playing with a friend.

Joshua Demarest had reportedly burrowed into the back of the large pile of snow, which was created by a public works crew who were clearing the streets in New York.

Joshua and his friend were then buried under tonnes of additional snow when a truck dumped more onto the mound.

The boys, who were reported missing around 5pm on Tuesday, were only found when a police dog located one boy's sled, according to Greenwich-Cambridge Police Chief George Bell.

Workers and police frantically used shovels and their hands to free the boys.

Joshua was rushed to Saratoga Hospital but was pronounced dead.

The second boy, 12, was found about an hour later and is now recovering at home.
