A former Scots football coach and kit man has been arrested in Northern Ireland over historic child sex abuse claims.

Jim McCafferty, 71, handed himself into a police station near his home in Belfast, where he was detained and arrested on Wednesday.

Police Scotland also confirmed they have received a report of "non-recent sexual abuse" in relation to McCafferty and are carrying out inquiries.

McCafferty, originally from Wishaw in North Lanarkshire, was formerly kit man at Celtic, Hibernian and Falkirk and was involved in football in Scotland and Ireland from the 1980s.

Wednesday's arrest relates to alleged offences against children in Northern Ireland.

He is currently being quizzed by officers over the claims at Musgrave Police Station.

The arrest came after an interview McCafferty gave to a national newspaper which appeared on its front page on Wednesday morning.

Detective superintendent Deirdre Bones, from the PSNI's Public Protection Branch, said: "A 71-year-old male has been arrested by detectives after presenting himself at a station in Belfast.

"He was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences against children in Northern Ireland. He is currently helping police with their enquiries."

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Police in West Lothian have received a report of non-recent sexual abuse and will commence inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this matter."

A spokesman for Hibernian said: "Everyone at the club was shocked to read this man's confessions to a national newspaper about his time in football. He has described activity which has no place in football, other sport or any part of society and which we expect will lead to criminal charges.

"Hibernian will assist the police with their inquiries in every way that we can. We would urge anyone who may have any information which can assist with inquiries to contact Police Scotland on 101."

Falkirk FC said they are aware of the allegations, but none of them relate to McCafferty's stint at the club.
