Season's greetings: Century of Christmas cards revealed in display
Quirky illustrations stand out as Glasgow School of Art shows off its festive memorabilia.
A decapitated boar, disgruntled turkey and kilt-wearing Santa are not what you'd expect to find on traditional Christmas cards.
Nor would you normally give these cards to your closest friends or colleagues.
But festive staples are being challenged this year in an outlandish art exhibition depicting Christmas cards through the decades.
Glasgow School of Art has revealed a selection of historic cards, alongside photographs and ephemera spanning more than 100 years of the institution's history.
Many of the cards were designed or held by GSA alumni and teachers then passed them on to the school's archives.
Notable contributors include Daisy McGlashan, Kath Whyte and Conrad McKenna.
"Since the school's opening The Glasgow School of Art staff and students have celebrated Christmas through the creation of beautifully illustrated cards which they sent to one another," says Jocelyn Grant of GSA archives and collections.
"The cards on show in the exhibition reveal the work that this close-knit community of students and staff put into events and artwork alongside their study and teaching.
"Many of the Christmas cards on display today were gifted to GSA Archives and Collections by notable GSA alumni and staff, and they demonstrate the talents of the individuals who make up GSA's history."
Some of the cards displayed date back to the late 19th century, while others depict Christmas during war-time eras.
Ms Grant added: "The public will be able to see designs that show the impact of external factors on the school, in particular the First and Second World Wars.
"They show how students both incorporated these events into their work and also looked to contribute their skills to the war effort."
Two of the designers whose cards are on show are GSA graduates Kit and Margaret Grant.
A former tutor in Interior Design, Margaret Grant is now 96.
Meanwhile Conrad McKenna notably kept the design for Nicola Sturgeon's 2014 Christmas card in his collection - a wintry landscape by the late Phyllis Dodd.
Merry Christmas! A History of GSA Christmas Cards will be on show in the Reid Building from December 7-21.
A limited edition set of historic Christmas card designs has also been reproduced by the GSA.
