A British man has reportedly died while on a university skiing trip to France.

According to local reports, the man was found by friends in their accommodation in the Val Thorens resort in the Alps on Sunday morning.

Thousands of Oxford and Cambridge students attend the annual Varsity ski trip, which dates back to 1921.

Nuco Travel, which runs the week-long trip, told Cambridge University news site Varsity: "Sadly one of our passengers passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2016.

"At this time, to respect their family's and friends' privacy, we will not be commenting further."

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are supporting the family of a British national who died in France on 4 December.

"We are in contact with the local authorities."
