The mystery involved a car registered to Edinburgh from the 1960s, an unknown location and a young couple looking very much in love on their big day.

Hours after Romanian photographer Alex Galmeanu launched his search for the couple to reunite them with their undeveloped wedding pictures, the puzzle had been solved.

As the story was shared on social media, a man by the name of Alastair Bremner realised they were taken at his sister's wedding.

He told the BBC it was Kathleen and Pete Maloney's marriage but could not recall who took the pictures at the time.

Mr Galmeanu found the pictures on a rare Balda Baldix folding camera on eBay and thought their identity may have been discovered by the vehicle in one picture.

The Austin Maxi in question was indeed registered to Mr Bremner's father, who said it was bought near Dollar in Clackmannanshire where they lived before moving to England.

The location of the wedding had been previously solved and confirmed the connection to England, with the the general manager of the Burleigh Court Hotel in Gloucestershire noticing her workplace on the story.

Christine Read has worked at the hotel since 1980 and said she recognised it as soon as she saw the photos.

She told STV News: "Straight away I identified that they were taken here. The first one on the steps are on the terrace to the back of the house.

"The one with the confetti is to the front of the house extending out to the car park. And the other one with the car is to the front of the house. I just hope that they find the initial guests."

The camera itself was shipped from Southam near Birmingham having spent years on a local collector's shelf who apparently "never had the curiosity to open it".

Writing in his blog, Mr Galmeanu said he now hopes to return the photos to the couple or a relative.

He said: "Knowing I'm the first one who saw these images after so many years, this captivated me enough to want to know more about the people pictured.

"The pictures are from a wedding, maybe the most important event in a family's life - and they never got the chance to see them."
