At least 63 people have been killed after a passenger train derailed in northern India.

More than 120 others were hurt after 14 of the train's carriages left the track near the city of Kanpur.

Volunteers and police have pulled out bodies from the coaches and were working to rescue trapped passengers in other carriages, said Daljeet Chaudhary, a director general of police.

Injured passengers were being treated with first aid near the site, with those more seriously hurt being taken to hospitals in the city.

It is not clear how the accident happened, but the death toll is expected to rise.
