The hunt continues for the killer of a young man who "wouldn't say boo to a mouse" four days after he was murdered.

Joseph McMenemy, 27, was found seriously injured at his home in Donaldson Street, Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, at around 11.55pm on Tuesday.

Police say Mr McMenemy died a "violent death" and a major murder investigation is continuing in order to track his killer

Tributes also flooded in online for the young man in the days after his death. He was described as a " a lovely, funny young man".

Joyce Smith smith said: "Such a tragic waste of a young life. Myself and my son and daughter knew Joe personally and he was a lovely, funny young man.

"Happy memories of days and weekends away with a local youth group he came to. Rest in peace Joe. Our hearts go out to his family to lose him in such tragic circumstances."

Carla Paterson added: "Such devastating news - went to school with him. He was so quiet and wouldn't say boo to a mouse.

"I hope they find the evil, sick animal who took his life. Rest in peace Joseph, my thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends."

Noor Al-Madani wrote: "So sad to hear - have memories of him in the school and chapel choir and how he loved Elvis song wooden heart. Was so quiet."

Shane Devlin added: "Who would want to do such a thing, he was a good lad with a kind heart. I just can't get my head around it. RIP Joe, you will be truly missed."

Detectives probing the murder say it is "absolutely critical" that they catch who was responsible for Mr McMenemy's murder and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Detective inspector Rory Hamilton said: "A man has died a violent death and it is absolutely critical that we get to the bottom of who is responsible.

"Extensive enquiries are under way to establish the circumstances of this incident but we need support from the local community to find answers for Joseph McMenemy's family.

"If you were in the surrounding area late on Tuesday evening and saw or heard anything suspicious we would like to hear from you.

"I am confident that somebody must know something about who is involved and I would appeal to anyone with information to come forward and speak to us as a matter of urgency.
