Stationery company Staples is to disappear from the high street, with Scots jobs at risk.

The company's four stores in Scotland will be among those losing the Staples brand in the coming months.

The UK retail arm has been bought by restructuring company Hilco Capital for a "nominal amount".

The new owners said the brand would be "phased out" over the next few months but it is not clear what will happen to the 1100 staff employed in the UK.

Staples has four stores in Scotland, two in Glasgow, one in Edinburgh and one in Aberdeen.

Paul McGowan from Hilco Capital said: "We are pleased to have concluded a transaction with Staples and look forward to working with the UK team.

"While retail in the UK has been challenged recently, a team led by retail veteran Alan Gaynor will work alongside the existing management team to build a plan for success for the business."

The company announced in May it wanted to concentrate on their North American business and would be looking at alternatives for the European branches.

Shira Goodman, chief executive of Staples, said: "Agreeing to sell our UK retail business to Hilco aligns with our go-forward strategy of focusing on our North American and mid-market business, and is a meaningful step in that process."

Hilco Capital owns a number of retailers in the UK, including music chain HMV.
