Rape victim arrested for having 'extra-marital sex' in Dubai
The woman, who is in her 20s, was allegedly raped by two Birmingham men who filmed the attack.
A British tourist who reported being raped by two men in Dubai has been arrested and charged with having extra-marital sex, it has been claimed.
The woman, who is in her 20s, was raped in a "brutal and violent" manner by two men from Birmingham who filmed it, according to the victim's father on an online fundraising page.
She was in the United Arab Ermirates on holiday at the time and reported the incident to the police.
However police officials "promptly" arrested her and confiscated her passport, according to UAE law experts Detained in Dubai.
She has since been bailed, but could be jailed if found guilty after a trial.
The victim's father said she her life has been "shattered", and trying to crowdfund £25,000 to cover her legal costs.
Radha Stirling, founder and director of Detained in Dubai, said: "The UAE has a long history of penalising rape victims.
"It is still not safe for victims to report these crimes to the police without the risk of suffering a double punishment.
"Police regularly fail to differentiate between consensual intercourse and violent rape. Victims go to them expecting justice, and end up being prosecuted.
"They not only invalidate their victimisation, they actually punish them for it."
A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said they are "supporting British woman in relation to this case and will remain in contact with her family".
