The Falkirk Wheel will be closed to boats for a month as it undergoes its annual "MOT".

Work on the rotating boat lift will get under way next Thursday, when it is due to be shut to vessels until December 9.

Engineers will carry out inspections and maintenance, as well as replacing any elements of the structure as required.

Scottish Canals, which manages the Wheel and the Forth and Clyde Canal, said the work will drain the lift of water.

Paul Berry, Scottish Canals' project manager, said: "The Falkirk Wheel is an incredible and unique feat of engineering as well as one of Scotland's top tourism attractions and it is essential we carry out regular maintenance to ensure the Wheel continues to operate safely."

The Wheel's visitor centre, cafe and gift shop will remain open.
