A new music festival in Dundee will take place next year after the council approved its licensing application.

Councillors unanimously agreed to grant the license for Carnival Fifty Six at Camperdown Park on August 12 and 13.

Festival organisers promise five live music areas including a main stage, big top tent and VIP area along with bars and food stalls.

The event, named after the city's latitudinal coordinates, is being produced by Loudsound, the team behind a raft of high-profile festivals including Bestival and RockNess.

It will be the first major music festival in Dundee since 30,000 fans attended BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in 2006.

Craig Blyth, the festival's founder said: "We are delighted by today's decision by Dundee City Council, and are particularly pleased to have received a 100% vote of approval.

"It conveys a resoundingly positive message that Dundee is open for business.

"This is an exciting time for the city with the waterfront regeneration and major inward investment attracting significant focus and interest nationally and internationally."

He added: "With an excellent location and first class transport links, there has never been a better time to capitalise on the unique momentum the city is enjoying, along with the appetite from the public for a music festival.

"The countdown to Carnival Fifty Six is now officially on."

Dave Grindle, operations director of Loudsound, said: "Camperdown Park in Dundee presents an excellent opportunity as a location to stage an inner-city music event.

"Loudsound looks forward to working with the team and deploying its extensive festival management experience to deliver a professional, safe and secure event where everyone can enjoy themselves."
