A soldier has been killed during a live fire exercise at an RAF weapons range in the Highlands.

It is understood another soldier has also been injured in the shooting incident at RAF Tain.

Police and and ambulance were called to the bombing range in Tain, in Ross-shire, at around 5.55pm on Tuesday.

Officers are currently parked at the entrance of the site and surrounding roads have been closed.

The condition of the injured soldier is not yet known.

The air weapons range, which is predominately used by aircrews for bombing practice, is located three miles from Tain on the Dornoch Firth.

It is also used by the army and has a rifle range and small arms range.

An Army Spokesperson said: "We are aware of an incident at the Tain base, near Inverness.

"We will release more information as and when it becomes available. It would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this point."

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said an ambulance and a doctor had been sent to the scene.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "Police are currently in attendance at RAF Tain following a report of an incident.

"A call was received about the incident at 5.55pm. Officers are currently at the scene."

In August, private Conor McPherson, 24, from Paisley, Renfrewshire, was killed during a night firing drill with the Royal Regiment of Scotland at the Otterburn firing range in Northumberland.

The Black Watch soldier suffered a serious head wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
