A British teenager has died after getting into difficulty while scuba diving with his father in Indonesia.

The 17-year-old was in the waters of Wakatobi national park, a remote Unesco heritage site to the east of Borneo, when he got into trouble.

The teenager is reported to have been pronounced dead upon arrival at the resort's medical treatment room.

A Foreign Office spokesman told ITV News: "We are providing support to the family of a British national who died in Sulawesi, Indonesia".

Earlier this year, a woman from Singapore died during a dive off the eastern Indonesian island of Flores, while in a separate incident a Russian national was mauled to death while diving in the country.

Wakatobi National Park covers 3.4 million acres of islands and water and has been a protected UNESCO area since 2012.
