A man is being questioned by police over a serious assault in the Borders which left the victim needing hospital treatment.

The 27-year-old suffered injuries to his face after the incident in The Square, Kelso, on Sunday at around 12.30am.

He was taken to the Borders General Hospital.

Inspector Calum Welsh said: "A man is currently detained in connection with this incident, however we'd urge any witnesses who have not yet spoken to officers to get in touch.

"Those with information can speak to a local officer, contact Police Scotland on 101, or make an anonymous report to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
