Italy has been struck by two earthquakes in just a couple of hours.

Both quakes struck near the central Italian city of Perugia with tremors felt as far away as Rome, some 145 miles south-west.

The second, stronger quake measured 6.4 on the Richter scale.

Officials in the town of Visso, not far from the epicentre, reported several injuries. Several old rural churches collapsed or were damaged. Schools were ordered to be closed on Thursday.

The epicentres of both quakes were near the town of Castelsantangelo sul Nera in the Marche region.

The quakes comes just two months after an earthquake killed almost 300 and levelled a number of small towns in central Italy.
