Firefighters battled through the night to tackle a large blaze at a former primary school.

The fire at the Wellbrae Primary School building in Forfar was reported shortly before 7pm on Saturday.

Crews from Forfar, Dundee, Kirriemuir and Brechin were called to the scene and at the height of the blaze six fire engines were invovled.

The fire service said an aerial rescue unit was also used when the flames broke through the roof of the building.

The fire was extinguished around 2am on Sunday, with much of the building gutted.

No-one is thought to have been injured in the incident and the building is currently being inspected.
