Purists of the great outdoors might sneer at the rise of glamping across the UK.

Luxury tree houses, wigwams and camping pods now enable holidaymakers to be at one with mother nature - without having to sacrifice their cafetieres and Egyptian cotton bed sheets.

The trend has continued to diversify in Scotland as one farmer has created luxury holiday flats inside vintage single-decker buses.

Travel enthusiast Balfour Stewart, 61, bought a pair of buses two years ago, and has since renovated with king-size beds, fully functional kitchens and bathrooms.

One even has a wood-fired hot tub.

Mr Balfour was born on Bankrugg Farm, East Lothian, which he has continued to operate as a working farm despite the increasing popularity of his improvised hotel business.

The farmer was inspired by TV show Grand Designs to convert the old Edinburgh buses into cosy flats.

His son-in-law Jason ripped up the insides and completely redesigned the interior of the former public transport vehicles which include one that used to be on the number 13 Edinburgh line.

The unique setting does not come cheap, with prices for a three-night stay starting at £399, rising to £799 for seven nights.

Mr Balfour said: "It's just something you have to do now when you're running a farm, you have to be able to diversify.

"We've seen things like Grand Designs and Amazing Spaces on TV before and always wanted to have a go, this seemed like the perfect way to do it.

"Our son-in-law, Jason, designed and built everything on the inside."

Guests have the chance to get close to the chickens, horses and alpacas while the day-to-day running of the farm continues.

The farm has proven to be a hit for those looking for a more quirky stay in Scotland on popular booking website Airbnb since being made available in July this year.

Mr Balfour added: "There's been a lot of interest from people who've heard about us through word of mouth but we're starting to get a lot of inquiries from people who've found us on Airbnb.

"Since we launched in July, we've had 20 bookings.

"It started with a couple from Dundee and it's just spiralled from there so this weekend we had a couple from Cologne, Germany, who were just really excited to be here."

He already has plans to add another luxury bus to his increasing collection and this time has his sights set on converting a double-decker bus.

He said: "That will be next year's project, but for the moment we're focusing on the two we already have.

"We're still working out exactly how that one is going to work, whether it will be one room or two, but it is something we're definitely looking into trying."
