A security guard at the LA home of supermodel Miranda Kerr has reportedly shot an intruder who was armed with a knife after the man stabbed him, according to reports.

Kerr, who is engaged to Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel, was not at the property at the time of the incident, police said.

A statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said: "The intruder stabbed the armed security guard and the armed security guard shot the intruder."

The incident took place on Friday morning, police said.

Both men were taken to hospital, where the security guard is in a stable condition and the intruder is listed as critical with non-life threatening injuries, according to reports.

A man who gave his name as Jerry told Los Angeles TV station CBS2: "The man, after he was shot, still held the knife and was going after the security man so my guy kicked the knife out of the perpetrator's hands."

Police said: "There were no occupants in the house at the time of this incident. The incident took place on the property, but not inside the house."

Between 2010 to 2013, Australian model Kerr was married to British actor Orlando Bloom, and the pair have a five-year-old son, Flynn.
