The Duchess of Cambridge has travelled to the Netherlands on her first overseas trip alone.

This comes a day after British Prime Minister Theresa May made the same journey to speak to her counterpart, Mark Rutte, about the implications of Brexit.

The Duchess met King Willem-Alexander and visited the Hague's Mauritshuis art museum to view the Royal Collection.

While there, she stopped in front of the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring painting by 17th century artist Johannes Vermeer.

Queen Elizabeth's private secretary Sir Christopher Geidt joined Kate's party, with a Buckingham Palace spokesman saying this was because of Sir Geidt's position as a trustee of the Royal Collection.

Emilie Gordenker, one of the Mauritshuis's two directors, said the Duchess seemed particularly taken with The Goldfinch, by Carel Fabritius.

"She asked a lot of questions about the presentation of the paintings, because although she is familiar with a lot of the Queen's paintings she has never seen them in this setting before, which gives them a different context."

The Duchess also visited the British Ambassador's residence.
