A radiographer who raped a woman at a Premier Inn while on a business trip has been jailed.

Keith Heslop, who told a court her was a "typical man", carried out the assault at the hotel in Airth, Stirlingshire.

At the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday, the 45-year-old was jailed for seven years after he was found guilty of raping the woman in March 2011.

Following the assault by Heslop, formerly of County Durham, the 29-year-old woman was left with bruising and had a tooth missing, the court heard.

Lord Malcolm told the father-of-six: "It goes without saying this was a very serious crime and only a substantial prison sentence is appropriate."

He added the victim impact statement prepared by the woman showed the attack had "a devastating effect on her".

Heslop had been on the business trip to Scotland after a company in Falkirk had contacted his employers seeking a demonstration of equipment.

The court heard his victim had contacted a relative after the attack when she phoned in a distressed state, before she told a friend a few days later she had been raped.

Heslop had denied raping the woman and told a previous trial: "I am a typical man. If it's there you are going to have it."

Defence counsel Margaret Breslin said on Monday her client maintained his innocence and had a record for "low level" offending from when he was very young.
