Perthshire golf course to close at the end of October
Employees given shock news that 18-hole Glenisla course has been sold to a developer.
A popular Perthshire golf course is set to close at the end of the month after 20 years.
Glenisla Golf Course, near Alyth, is understood to have been sold to housing developers last week.
Employees at the 18-hole course told golf publication Bunkered they found out the news on Friday.
The course, which had been on sale by owner Nick Somerville for some time before being taken off the market, will close to the public on October 31.
An unnamed employee told Bunkered: "It came as a real shock to everyone to be called into a meeting on Friday when we told that the sale of the land to a property developer had been completed the day before.
"As you can imagine, everybody is very upset."
She added: "We have been told that there's a chance a new nine-hole course may be developed on the site at some point in the future but, if that happens, it would be years from now.
"Everybody wants a deal these days - nobody wants to pay the full rate. It's understandable but it still makes things hard and drives prices down.
The resort was originally developed by the Glenshee Chairlift Company to give its full-time ski employees during the off-season.
It was bought out of receivership by the Somerville family in 2004.
Several years ago, the owners secured outline planning permission for a £40m development on land adjacent to the site.
It was hoped the project for affordable housing, a 40-bed hotel and a 40-bed retirement home, would help protect the future of the golf course.
No one from the golf course was available for comment on Friday.
