Two people have been taken to hospital after being trapped by a "severe" fire at a ground floor flat in Edinburgh.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received numerous calls to Lower Granton Road around 7.15pm on Wednesday with 50 firefighters and 11 fire engines sent to the scene.

A number of residents were unable to leave their homes as the blaze spread throughout the building with two people carried out by firefighters.

They were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by ambulance staff who also attended. Their condition is not yet known at this time.

A SFRS statement added: "As of 11pm four fire engines remain in attendance with firefighters conducting dampening down operations and checking within the structure for any hidden fire spread.

"Specialist officers from the SFRS Fire Investigation Unit have also attended and will work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"No further information is available at this time."
