A main road in Dundee was closed off after a gas canister partially exploded on the back of a van.

The occupants of the Ford Transit contacted emergency services at around 10.30am on Monday to raise concerns that a gas can was leaking as they travelled along Kingsway.

The eastbound and westbound carriageways between Old Glamis Road and Forfar Road were closed to enable firefighters to spray water on to the canisters to ensure they were safe.

Inspector Steve Rose told STV gas had leaked from the canister after it came loose on the back of the van.

He said: "We didn't know what we had to contend with, hence the huge response from police and the fire service."

The incident was scaled down shortly before midday.

Mr Rose thanked motorists for their patience during the road closure, adding: "Safety is our priority. We had to make sure that there was no further potential for explosion."
