A bin lorry has been seized by police in a search for a missing Scottish RAF serviceman.

Corrie McKeague from Dunfermline in Fife was last seen after a night out in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, at around 3.20am on Saturday, September 24.

Suffolk Police confirmed they are inspecting the bin lorry as they think it may contain the 23-year-old's mobile phone.

A police helicopter has been involved in the search for the missing gunner over the weekend, while last week police released CCTV of him in the town.

Officers fear he may have tried to walk home to RAF Honington, which is a 20-minute drive away or almost three hours on foot.

A spokesman for the force said on Monday: "Analysis of mobile phone data shows his phone moved between Bury and Barton Mills on the morning of his disappearance.

"The work shows the phone was in Bury St Edmunds early on Saturday, September 24, and then moved to the Barton Mills area.

"It doesn't move after this and has not been used since. This phone has not been found at this time.

"Police are looking at what happened but are exploring the possibility that the phone may have been lost or discarded as the timings of the movement has been found to coincide with that of a bin lorry that is known to have travelled between the locations at the time. The bin lorry has been seized for examination."

Officers said large-scale searches of the the surrounding area in recent days have "not revealed any new information" on Mr McKeague's whereabouts.

Mr McKeague was reported as missing to police last Monday afternoon.

He is 5ft 10in, of medium build, with short light brown hair and was wearing a light pink shirt and white jeans or trousers at the time he was last seen.

His mother Nicola Urquhart, 48, has posted his photo on Facebook and appealed for people to share it in the hope it will help find her son.

Anyone with information relating to Mr McKeague's whereabouts is asked to contact the police on 101.
