The first storm which will hit the UK this storm season will be called Angus, with others named Fleur, Kamil and Wilbert.

The Met Office has revealed the names which will be given to the strongest weather conditions experienced by the UK and Ireland in the next 12 months.

It is the second year of the Name our Storms project by the Met Office and Met Eireann, which takes suggestions from members of the public.

The new storm season will begin on October 1 and run until September next year.

The forecasters picked the latest names from the 10,000 entries they received last year.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty said: "The whole point of the naming system is to raise awareness to storms and to better prepare people for impending severe conditions.

"We of course have the Met Office weather warning system, however the storm naming adds a new urgency to bad weather. In Norway they have been naming storms since the early 90s, and in Germany they have named both good and bad weather systems since the 50s.

"Last year during the naming trial I noticed a big change in people's attitudes to bad weather here in Scotland. People talked about the storms a lot more, they trended on social media, and in turn people were a lot more prepared.

"One thing that did get mentioned to me was the lack of Scottish names in the list, which was fed back, so I'm happy to say we start with a very Scottish name this year, Angus. Like last year, storm names with alternate between male and females, with last year's list starting with Abiagil.

"In the 2015/16 season we reached the letter 'K', with Storm Katie in March.

"Who knows how far we'll get into the list this season, but let's hope we're not on 'H', Holly by Christmas."

Storms will be named when they are deemed to have the potential to cause a substantial impact in the UK or Ireland.

Unlike during the pilot project, during the year ahead heavy snow and rain may be taken into account when deciding whether a storm is strong enough to be given a human name, although it will still need to be suitably windy.

The names due to be assigned for 2016/2017 are: Angus, Barbara, Conor, Doris, Ewan, Fleur, Gabriel, Holly, Ivor, Jacqui, Kamil, Louise, Malcolm, Natalie, Oisin, Penelope, Robert, Susan, Thomas, Valerie and Wilbert.

Storms are not named using the letters Q, U, X, Y or Z in line with the naming conventions for hurricanes in the United States.
